Unidentified miscreants today decamped with 17 lakh rupees from a nationalised bank ATM in suburban Thavalakuppam with no signs of use of force and the machine remaining intact, police said.
The theft came to light when the watchman of the ATM of Canara Bank located on the East Coast road found the cabin door open in the wee hours when he returned after being away for a shortwhile and informed the bank officials.
Senior Superintendent of Police V J Chandran, who along with Superintendent of Police (Rural) V Deivasigamani, visited the spot said the cash had been loaded in the ATM only yesterday and there was no sign of use of force by the miscreants.
It was suspected that those who were 'conversant' with the password of the ATM machine could have removed the money, estimated to be Rs 17 lakh, he told PTI.
"We are enquiring a few persons, including the watchman attached to the ATM and none has been arrested so far," the SSP said.
Special teams had been set up to trace the culprits, he added.
