The wedding of a 17-year-old girl in a village in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district was prevented by the Women and Child Development department as a part of its drive against child marriage.
Acting on a tip-off that the minor was supposed to get married in Khargone's Kaatkoot village, about 70 kms from here, the WCD officials raided a house in Sheetal Nagar area of Indore yesterday.
The officials informed their counterparts in Khargone who immediately rushed to the site and stopped the girl's marriage, WCD's project officer Ravi Sharma told PTI today.
The officials later discussed the matter with the girl's family members, who then signed an undertaking that they will not get her married till she turns 18.
As per law, the marriage of a boy below the age of 21 years and that of a girl under 18 years is a crime which attracts imprisonment of two years or a fine of Rs one lakh or both under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
