The incident took place at railway gate near Manichapra village at 11 PM yesterday when 18 wagons of the goods train derailed due to "unspecified reasons", the Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinay Kumar said without ruling out Maoists' role in the incident.
Though the cause of derailment was immediately not known, the Maoists' role could not be denied, Kumar said.
The impact of derailment was so intense that the derailed wagons mounted on each other even as the railway track upto 100 meters got damaged, he said adding, senior railway and district officials rushed to the spot to probe the incident.
The derailed wagons of the goods train were laden with iron rods, he said. There was no no casualty or injury to anyone in the incident, the SP said.
Train service on Muzaffarpur-Narkatiaganj railway section has been disrupted due to the derailment and the long distance train passing through this route has been diverted through other lines, railway officials said.
