19 arrested, 3 cops suspended over police station suicide

Nineteen persons were arrested and three policemen suspended in connection with violent protest in Mehmoodabad district where a woman allegedly committed suicide inside a police station.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) A Satish Ganesh said that 19 persons have been arrested in connection with violent protest following suicide by the woman inside toilet of the police station in Sitapur.
He said that three policemen, including a head constable, posted at Mehmoodabad police station have been suspended.
The IG said that an FIR had been lodged against 67 people, in which a few had been named.
He said that a youth who got injured during demonstration died at the hospital.
Ganesh said that post mortem of the bodies had been conducted and reports were awaited.

28-year-old Jeenat allegedly hanged herself yesterday at a police station here hours after she was prevented from committing suicide by a forest guard, leading to violent protests by her family members in which four policemen, including a Superintendent of Police, were injured.
Jeenat hanged herself in the washroom of Mehmoodabad Kotwali police station, where she had been brought by the forest guard who had prevented her from jumping into a canal.
"Following a family dispute, the woman first tried to commit suicide by jumping into a canal but was prevented from doing so by a forest guard who noticed her just on time. She later hanged herself at the police station's washroom using a dupatta," SP Rajesh Krishna had said.
The woman's family, however, has alleged foul play on the part of the police.
Agitated over the incident, Jeenat's family blocked the Kotwali road demanding an inquiry into her death, a police official said, adding that the agitation later turned violent as the protesters indulged in brick-batting and firing.
The police fired in air and used tear gas to disperse the protesters, the official said, adding the mob also set a police jeep on fire.
According to Deputy SP Vijay Bahadur Singh, four policemen, including SP Krishna, were injured in the clash.
District Magistrate has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and section 144 has been clamped as a preventive step.
