Chief Parliament Secretary for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Virsa Singh Valtoha told reporters here that the state government will spend Rs 1,034 crore under the scheme.

"The Government would ensure that all the 15,170 rural inhabitations get an assured water supply of 70 Litres Per Person Per Day (lpppd) by the end of December, 2013," Valtoha said.

He said that the Punjab Government has chalked out a comprehensive plan for the current year 2012-13 to provide clean and safe drinking water to the villages.

He said that under the scheme 600 villages would be covered and 70 lpppd of water would be supplied. He said that water meters would also be installed to check illegal connections and wastage of water.

Water bills would range from Rs 70 to 100 per month, Valtoha said, adding that strict measures will be taken to ensure that presence of uranium and heavy metals in drinking water does not exceed the set parameters.
