Sangrur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused -- Ankit Kumar and Harish Kumar -- cheated a number of persons worth about Rs 31 lakh.
They were held after a local resident, Tej Bhanu Parkash Garg, lodged a complaint with the police.
Garg claimed that the accused cheated Parkash by claiming that his insurance amount worth Rs 4.80 lakh was settled and he had to deposit a tax amount of Rs 99,990 to receive the said amount.
After a few days, he received another call from a person who introduced himself as an official of RBI conveying him that his earlier amount was less by Rs 50,000 and he had to deposit the same extending him a warning that if he failed in doing so his earlier amount would stand forfeited, the SSP said.
Garg realising of being duped reported the matter to police on August 12.
Police swung into action and detected the Delhi branch. The bank branch on being informed about lodging of FIR stopped their transactions on pretext of failure in system and a police team was dispatched to Delhi to nab the accused.
