Two employees of the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) in the district were arrested for allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 5,000, Anti-Corruption Bureau officials said today.
The complainant had constructed two toilets in his house under 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and is eligible for subsidy of Rs 22,000, Deputy Superintendent of Police ACB Thane Unit Sanjay Mohite said.
He could get the subsidy only if the toilets are inspected and cleared for payment by the employees of the civic body, he added.
When the complainant approached mukadam Mahendrasingh Benval, and a sweeper Naresh Makwana, the duo demanded Rs 6,000 for inspection and issuance of the certificate for payment of subsidy. After negotiations, the amount was settled at Rs 5,000, the officer said.
Following a complaint, a trap was laid at the UMC headquarters today and ACB sleuths nabbed Benval while accepting the bribe. The bribe was also taken for Makwana, Mohite added.
A case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 was registered against the duo and investigations are underway, police said.
