Two engineers of the Delhi International Airport Limited have been suspended in connection with an IndiGo aircraft crossing runway and entering into a taxiway where a Jet Airways plane was already stationed for taxiing, following an order from aviation regulator DGCA.
The two engineers had failed to switch off the lights at the runway which was not in use, which contributed to the IndiGo Airbus plane intruding into the other taxiway at Delhi airport earlier this week, a senior DGCA official said.
A major mishap was averted on Wednesday when aircraft today left its assigned lane, crossed the runway, and entered another taxiway where a Jet Airways plane was stationed less than 30 meters behind it, prompting the pilots to apply the brakes to avoid a collision.
"When runways are not in use, the runway lights are supposed to remain switch off. However, at the time of the incident, the lights were on and partially led to the incident. Therefore, two engineers have been suspended in this connection," the official said.
The official said on January 30 also, a GoAir commander had filed a hazard report stating that the lights of an used runway were found on when he was operating flight at the Indira Gandhi international airport here.
The commander and the first officer of the flight have already been derostered by the airline, pending investigation, which is underway.
