When the domestic help of the victim's house reached there this morning, nobody responded to her repeated knockings, SP (Rural) Surendra Tiwari said.
She then informed the neighbours who broke the door of the house to find the retired Professor Kamala Trivedi and her brother Lallu (62) dead. At the same time a person was trying to escape from the house with looted items, Tiwari said.
The neighbours caught the accused, identified as Ravi Kumar (25) who reportedly used to work at the victim's house, and handed him over to the police, he said.
Director General of Police (DGP) Jagmohan Yadav who was in Kanpur to attend a programme, visited Kalyanpur police station and directed the officials to take actions against those whose negligence in duty may have led to the incident.
Concerned over the rising incidents of crime in the state, Yadav said that people can have confidence over police only when officials pursue a case actively and deal with the criminals strictly.
