2 foreigners get jail term for drug trafficking

Two foreign nationals were recently convicted and sentenced to varying terms of rigorous imprisonment by different courts in Tamil Nadu for dealing in drugs, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) said today.
"Principal NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) Court, Chennai on July 27 convicted Sri Lankan national Ramesh K, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and levied a fine of Rs 1 lakh for possession of 660 grams of Alprazolam," a release from NCB's Zonal unit here said.
NCB had seized the drug from Ramesh in January 2010.
In default of the fine, the accused will have to undergo two more months of RI, it said citing the court verdict.
The NDPS Special Court in Coimbatore this week convicted and sentenced a Nigerian, Micheal Odinakka, to seven years' RI for possession, trafficking and export of heroin.
Odinakka was arrested by NCB from Erode in January 2012 while trying to send 193 gm of heroin concealed in decorative items through a courier service, it said adding he will have to serve an additional three year RI if he defaulted on his fine.
