2 get lifer in home inmate murder-burial case

A district court today sentenced the secretary of a rehabilitation home in Hooghly and his associate to life imprisonment after convicting them of murdering a beggar woman and dumping her body underneath the building.
Additional district sessions judge Arup Basu sentenced Uday Chand Kumar, Secretary of rehabilitation home 'Dulal Smriti Sangsad', and his associate Shyamal Ghose to life imprisonment after they were convicted of murdering Guriya after sexually assaulting her and dumping her body underneath on July 5, 2012 at Gurap in the district.
The two were charged under Sections 302, 201, 34 and 120B of IPC (murder, torture and trying to hide evidences).
The two were fined Rs one lakh each non-payment of which would cause additional two years' imprisonment, the court said in its order.
Nine others were acquitted in the case.
District police and CID had conducted investigations into the incident after district social welfare officer Rama Samanta visited the area and filed a report shortly after the incident.
A total of 57 had deposed as witnesses in the case. During his arguments Public Prosecutor Bidyut Roychowdhury had demanded hanging till death for the convicts.
