Two men have been arrested for supplying drugs at rave parties here after buying the contraband through the cryptic 'darknet' and paying for them in clandestine and unregulated currency Bitcoins, the police said today.
After learning about a gang involved in supplying party drugs, Kamal Kalra was arrested on October 29 with 100 pills of Ecstasy (42 gms), a psychotropic substance, said Rajesh Deo, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
During interrogation, Kalra revealed that he had procured the contraband from a person with whom he was in touch over phone, but never knew his real name, the officer said.
Kalra worked as DJ in parties from where he gathered contacts to supply drugs, he said.
After scanning the call details in his cellphone, the other person was identified as Mahesh Goyal and was arrested from southwest Delhi's Dwarka with 20 gms of ecstasy drug, Deo said.
Goyal revealed that while staying in Chennai, he had attended a party where he had consumed ecstasy for the first time and also learnt that such drugs could be obtained online, the DCP said.
While darknet is a clandestine Internet network which can only be accessed with specific software, configurations and authorisation and is difficult to track by the usual communications protocols and ports, Bitcoin is referred to as a cryptocurrency that allows consumers to make electronic transactions by skipping the legal banking channels.
The DCP said the matter will be taken up with the Narcotics Control Bureau and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to ensure that such transactions are curbed.
