2 held with gold biscuits worth Rs 5 crore
Press Trust of India Kolkata Two persons were arrested today after officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 140 gold biscuits from their possession from outside a Metro railway station in the central part of the city.
Gold biscuits weighing around 16.326 kg were seized from the possession of Asit Roy and Shyam Sarkar when the duo came out of Mahatma Gandhi Metro Station this morning, a senior DRI official said.
The gold biscuits, with a market value of around Rs 5 crore, were concealed inside a cloth wrapped around the duo's waist with cello tapes, he said.
The accused, both residents of Ranaghat in Nadia district, boarded a train to Dum Dum this morning and took a Metro rail to reach M G Road on their way to deliver the gold biscuits to a businessman in the Burrabazar area.
"We had information that these persons will be taking the Metro. We grabbed them once they came out of the M G Road station and approached a stall to buy cigarettes. One had 60 gold biscuits wrapped around his waist, while another had 40. All gold biscuits seemed to be manufactured abroad and was probably smuggled into West Bengal through the Bangladesh border," the official said.
When produced at a city court, the duo were remanded to judicial custody till May 3.
