2 INLD MLAs come to assembly with potatoes to highlight
Press Trust of India Chandigarh Two INLD MLAs today brought four sacks of potatoes and put it on display outside the Haryana Assembly to highlight the plight of farmers after a "steep fall" in the prices of the tuber crop this season.
The opposition party legislators Parminder Singh Dhull and Zakir Hussain surprised everyone at the assembly when they got down from their vehicles with four bags of potatoes weighing 50 kg each.
They said they were protesting because the government was in "deep slumber" and not moved by the plight of the farmers.
They claimed a potato farmer was getting as low as Re 1 per kg for his produce.
"Potato farmers are facing huge losses. The prices of the crop have nosedived to as low as Re 1. At many places, we have seen that the farmers are left with no option but to dispose of the stocks almost for free or dump them on farmlands or roadsides. The government must do something for them," Dhull said.
