In a faux pas by State Bank of India (SBI), two ITBP officers had to spend three nights in jail on charges of depositing "fake" notes with a SBI branch here though the currency was later found to be genuine by RBI.
Two officers of the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were discharged by the court after no offence was found to be made out, Chandigarh Police said in a release here today.
Ekta Mahajan, Branch manager of SBI's 3BRD Air Force Station Branch, in her complaint lodged with the police on May 17, had accused Nain Chand and another officer of the ITBP, Training Center, Rampur in Panchkula, of depositing 91 fake notes of Rs 1,000 denomination while depositing Rs 3,06,500 as salary of recruits undergoing training in the center.
The release said that the two ITBP officers were arrested and produced before the area Magistrate on May 18 who remanded them in police custody till May 22.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch today got the 91 "fake" notes examined from RBI in Chandigarh whose Assistant General Manager (AGM) Treasurer Pawan Kumar Lamba opined that "all suspected forged notes have been found genuine."
"Apparently, the case was registered on wrong information given by the SBI Branch Manager," police said in its release.
A senior officer of the Crime Branch told PTI that it would be examined whether action can be taken against SBI officials for giving "wrong information.
