The victims were working for a local liquor contractor, who got information that illegal wine was being transported for sale in his area. He asked his men to find out the movement of the illegal consignment, City Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh told PTI.
The liquor contractor's men left in a jeep and then dispersed in search of the consignment last night. After some time, they felt thirsty. To drink water, they stopped and got down at a hut in Bedpura Bajari village under Nalcha police station limits, where some children were playing, Singh said.
The liquor contractor's men ran and in a bid to escape from being attacked by the villagers, two of them fell in a gorge and died, he said.
The villagers caught hold of five other persons and thrashed them, injuring them badly, the SP said.
