2 killed as truck hits cycle

A 42-year-old man and his son were killed when a bicycle they were riding on was hit by a truck in Vivek Vihar area of east Delhi this morning, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Surrendra Kumar Tank and Ajay Tank.
According to police, the incident took place when Ajay was going to drop his father Surrendra, who worked as a clearner with MCD, at his office in Jhilmil area of the national capital.
Police said as the duo reached near Vivekanand Mahila College in Vivek Vihar area, the truck, in an attempt to save a biker, jumped the road divider, hit the bicycle on which victims were travelling and rammed into an electric pole before overturning. The duo died on the spot.
As the news of the incident spread hundreds of MCD workers gathered at the spot at about 11 am and blocked the main road in protest.
Protesters also blocked nearby area, causing traffic snarls. When senior police officials intervened in the matter, they called off their protest.
Police have arrested the truck driver, identified as Narendra Kumar, said a senior police officer.
