2 lakh folk artistes enlisted in WB: minister

West Bengal Minister of State for Information and Cultural affairs Indranil Sen today said the state government was working towards supporting folk artistes in rural pockets by inviting them to state-run cultural programmes throughout the year.
"Our government has enlisted 2 lakh folk artistes, many of them residing in far-flung areas of the state. The government is organising cultural programmes involving them all over the year," Sen told reporters at a programme to launch an audio CD of 'Nazrul Geeti' (songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam).
"We are also promoting talent by setting up poetry and jatra academy," he said.
Minister of state for Women and Child Development Dr Sashi Panja said the government was committed to promoting music by organising classical and other events and supporting such initiatives by different cultural organisations.
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly launched the CD of singer Manomay Bhattacharya.
