A leader of a teachers' union was gunned down today at Kasugaon when he was on his way to a government office along with a friend, who was also injured, official sources said.

A woman was shot dead and three others injured in two separate incidents in the district last night in fresh violence by suspected militants of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) after a gap of nearly three months.

With this the toll rose to five in attacks since Saturday across the BTAD region, prompting Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to direct top police brass to take the help of the Army and para-military forces if required.

"Vigil should be stepped up to foil the sinister designs of certain forces," Gogoi said after a meeting at his official residence and appealed to the people to remain alert and to maintain peace and harmony.

He said the latest violence was the handiwork of certain forces who wanted to create disturbances in the BTAD areas which were returning to normal.

The Ranjan Daimary faction of NDFB has been unleashing violence in the region, which witnessed clashes between Bodos and migrant Muslims leaving around 90 people dead and lakhs homeless during August-September this year.

Meanwhile, a special team of police reached Kokrajhar for search and seizure of illegal weapons, the sources said.
