Police has arrested two members of an extortion racket run by dreaded criminals Vikas Langarpuria and Dhirpal alias Kana operating allegedly from Haryana's Bhondsi jail.
The arrested, identified as Vineet Kumar alias Jhony (24) and Pawan Gulia (19), were demanding protection money of Rs 25 lakh from Aggarwal Sweets franchise holder in Najafgarh on behalf of Langarpuria and Dhirpal.
Dhirpal was orchestrating the racket from inside Bhondsi jail, where he is lodged for a murder case. Lagarpuria, who recently got out on bail in the same murder case, was managing the nexus from outside, police said.
According to police, one of the absconding gang member, Vikas had fired two shots inside the Aggarwal Sweets outlet on April 13, when the shop owner refused to pay the money.
On April 13, victim identified as Sanjay Kumar reported the matter to the police and claimed that a demand of Rs 25 lakh as protection money was made to him in the morning by an unidentified caller.
Accordingly, a case was registered and investigation was taken up. During the probe, investigators found that two men on a motorcycle executed the firing incident. Police also found that the mobile number which was active inside Bhondsi jail was being used to coordinate the entire extortion exercise.
The involvement of the extortion racket operated by Dhirpal and Langarpuria was confirmed. Several raids were conducted at hideouts in Bhondsi, Jhajjar, Gurgaon and Sonepat in Haryana to nab the members of the gang who were involved in the crime, police said.
"On Friday, a tip-off was received that Gulia and Jhony will come from Gurgaon in Swift Dzire car to go towards Najafgarh after which a trap was laid and both were caught. During interrogation, they told that the mastermind behind the conspiracy is Dhirpal and his associate Vikas Lagarpuria," a senior officer said.
