Wael Tahon, a high-rank police official and his driver were shot dead yesterday when masked gunmen shot them in front of Tahon's house, local media said.
Tahon was the head of detectives department of Matarya police station. Matarya district has witnessed many clashes between police and Muslim Brotherhood supporters in the recent days.
Security forces rushed to the spot for investigation.
The attack came hours after the ousted Islamist president was sentenced to 20 years in jail by a court here over charges related to the killing of 10 protesters when he was in power.
The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
