Two Uttar Pradesh legislators, who are facing threat of being disqualified on the ground that they were working as contractors despite being elected to the state Assembly, today met Governor Ram Naik at the Raj Bhawan here.
The legislators met the Governor and submitted their memorandum with regard to their case, a Raj Bhawan source said.
Naik has received the Election Commission's opinion after state Lokayukta NK Mehrotra recommended (on December 2) for disqualification of BSP MLA Uma Shankar Singh and BJP legislator Bajrang Bahadur Singh on the groung that they were "working as contractors after being elected to state assembly", they said.
Lokayukta in his report to the Raj bhawan had said that act of the two MLAs was in violation of Representation of People Act.
Presently, the sources said, the governor was taking legal opinion in the case and will study the memorandum and give them an opportunity to personally present their cases before taking a final decision on it next week, the source said.
After receiving the report, Governor Naik had sought an opinion of the ECI to disqualify these MLAs.
