Crossing over to another track to avoid a goods train proved fatal for two casual workers as they were hit by a Chennai-bound train, killing them on the spot at Tirupur near here.
Police said three casual labourers were walking on a track when they noticed an approaching freight train. They jumped onto another track, but failed to notice the other train, which hit them, killing two on the spot.
The other labourer was seriously injured and has been hospitalised.
The workers were laying down cables for signals, police said.
