The Aam Aadmi Party alleged that a two-and-half years old girl today drowned in water outside her house in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, as her village has got flooded due to an excessive filling of the Omkareshwar dam on the Narmada.
Police confirmed that they have received such information.
"We have got information that a small girl drowned in Aikhand village. Police team has rushed to the spot and we are awaiting a report," Khandwa superintendent of police Navneet Bhasin said.
"A 30-month-old girl drowned outside her house at Aikhand in Punasa tehsil," state AAP leader Chittaroopa Palit said here.
The girl was playing with her brother outside the house, she said, adding that the house, lying in the catchment area, is now surrounded by the dam water on three sides.
On September 25, state AAP convener Alok Agrawal had demanded that the water level of Omkareshwar reservoir should be brought down to 189 metres as per a 2008 High Court order, as the people living in the catchment area were facing the threat of their houses getting flooded.
The reservoir was filled to 192.4 metres (by closure of dam's gates) in violation of the HC order, he alleged.
Several agricultural fields were submerged and the water had entered houses, he had said.
