At least 20 people including six women were injured for violating prohibitory orders of the district administration, the police said.
Six leaders of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council, a pressure group, who were staging a rally against the government for alleged delay in initiating process to institutionalise traditional bodies here, were also arrested.
"We have arrested six persons including five women for violating the government's order and instigating a mob," East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang said.
The Police had to resort to cane charge to dispel a small crowd who allegedly violated the prohibitory orders of the administration.
According to the district police chief, the crowd was acting violently after the rally was over. Among those injured in the cane charge were Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) leaders and their supporters.
The injured were later taken to the nearby Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment, the SP said.
