Gujarat government today admitted that as many as 201 schools, including primary ones, across the state had closed down in the last five years.
During the Assembly session, Congress MLA Tejashree Patel raised a question about the closure of Gujarat government-run schools in the state, including primary, secondary and higher-secondary schools.
Apart from the figures of such schools being closed-down, she also sought an answer from the government about reasons behind such closures.
In his written reply, Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama stated that out of 201 government-run schools shut between 2010 and 2014, 75 were primary, 123 were secondary and three were higher secondary.
The Minister cited several reasons behind the closure. For primary schools, he said the decision to close down these 75 schools was taken after they didn't get the required students.
On the closure of secondary and higher secondary schools, Chudasama said they had to be shut down after they enrolled less than 20 students.
Another key reason he cited is the poor result of tenth and twelfth standard students.
Other schools were closed down after they failed to comply with norms laid by the Government of India's Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), he said.
