2015 sees worst dengue outbreak in last 6 yrs

Amidst a rising toll and nearly 6,500 dengue cases reported till today, 2015 has seen the worst outbreak of the vector-borne disease in Delhi in the last six years.
An update of the dengue report by the civic administration today took the official toll up to 25 with eight more fatalities recorded by them. However, at least 37 dengue deaths have been reported in the national capital this year.
The casualties in 2015 had long overtaken the dengue toll in 2010, when eight official deaths were reported.
Further, with 6,486 cases of dengue recorded this year, 2015 has also surpassed the total in this regard for 2010, which had seen 6,259 cases.
According to data released today by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), over 500 fresh cases have been reported in the last five days while five more casualties have also come to light.
Among the eight victims whose deaths were notified between September 23-26, the youngest to fall prey to the deadly disease was seven-month-old Peeru of Rohini area, while the oldest victim has been identified as a 70-year-old woman, Munia, of Sant Nagar area.

Of the total 6,486 cases this year, north Delhi recorded the highest at 1,817 while east Delhi posted the lowest with 824 cases. South Delhi has seen 1,766 cases. Also, 828 cases were reported from other states.
Among the civic zones in the city, Najafgarh Zone of South Delhi Municipal Corporation has recorded the highest number with 611 cases, said a senior official of SDMC, which compiles the dengue report on behalf of all the civic bodies in the city.
Of the fresh 504 cases in the last five days, 83 were reported from areas outside the jurisdiction of the municipal corporations. While 33 cases were reported from Uttar Pradesh, 20 of those diagnosed with the disease during this period came from Haryana.
Last year, the city had reported three deaths and recorded nearly 1,000 cases.
Till September 26, the number of houses found positive for mosquito breeding stood at 1,99,721 while prosecution was launched in the same period against 18,546 households, the report said.
