Twenty-four militants of the Achik National Volunteer Council-Breakaway (ANVC-B) were arrested from their camp located at the headquarter of Meghalaya's West Garo Hills District tonight.
"We have arrested 24 cadre from ANVC(B) following strong evidence of their involvement in the recent killing of the two labourers from Assam," District SP Mukesh Sangma told PTI.
A 46-year old labourer, Sohidur Isalm, from the town of Mankachar in Assam was brutally killed by unidentified gunmen on the outskirts of Tura town in West Garo Hills yesterday. Earlier, on July 21, a labourer Sahed Miah from the same town was found dead near Montfort Education Centre, on the outskirts of Tura.
The ANVC-B is among the two groups among dozens in Garo Hills engaged in formal peace negotiations with the Central and state governments.
The 24 cadre were arrested from the outfit's camp at Edenbari in Tura.
The SP said that police surrounded their camp completely and they had no other option but to surrender to the forces.
The police team recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from the spot which include 6 shot guns, 1 DBBL gun, one modified pistol, one 7.65 pistol with one magazine, four 7.65 rounds, 4 .22 rounds besides incriminating documents, the SP said.
"Interrogation against the 24 is currently on," Singh said.
