24 cm ovarian cyst removed from teenage girl

: A city clinic today claimed it had conducted a novel surgery on an 18 year old girl, removing a rare 24 cm sized Ovarian Dermoid Cyst from her body.
The girl had come to Gateway Clinics here with a huge mass in the abdomen and was evaluated by a team of surgeons.
The checks showed the huge mass filling her entire abdomen and the scan showed an ovarian dermoid cyst of six 24 x20x8 cm, Sendhil Kumar, who lead the team of surgeons, told reporters today.
Considering her age, it was decided to make a very minor five cm incision, since contents of the cyst could cause irritation to the abdominal lining if spilt into the abdomen. Extreme care was taken to avoid spillage in the 90 minute surgery. About six litres of greasy, fatty material and hair was removed from the cyst, he said.

Many dermoid cysts of the ovary do not directly cause symptoms. However, if a dermoid cyst grows, it may result in complications due to encroachment on neighbouring structures, gynaegologist Dr Nivedisha Aarthy said.
A small percentage of dermoid cysts can progress to cancer, Aarthy said.
