24 railway stations to be made tourist-friendly

Railways has identified 24 stations to be developed as tourist and hygiene-friendly.

An MoU was signed between Railways and Tourism Ministry to carry out the campaign at the 24 stations that included Agra, Ajmer, Puri, Amritsar, Varanasi, Tirupati and Gaya.

"Railways has taken number of steps for improving cleanliness and hygiene at stations and trains including mechanised cleaning system and on-board service schemes," Railway Minister Mukul Roy said after signing the pact.

He said beside 24 stations, some long-distance trains would also be carrying 'Clean India' messages through vinyl wrapping method to create awareness about cleanliness.

Railways, the nation's lifeline, will also carry forward the campaign with special messages on keeping premises clean on 130 lakh train tickets.

Tourism Minister Subodh Kant Sahai said collaboration with the Railway Ministry is very important for developing tourism in the country and abroad.

"This will help in effectively branding India as a major tourist destination. Railway is a major driver for development of tourism and the Ministry of Railway and Ministry of Tourism have decided to work together towards the common objective of brand positioning and effective promotion enhancing tourism in India," he said.

Cooperation of corporates and NGOs will be sought to carry forward the campaign and to sustain it a PPP model will be opted.

The Railways will also work towards the provision of controlled access to the stations and provision of chemical toilets in trains to keep the stations clean.
