Twenty-four women died while undergoing sterilisation procedures in Mumbai between 2013 to 2017, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has informed the Legislative Council.
The chief minister was replying to a question by NCP members Hemant Takle, Sunil Tatkare, Leader of Opposition Dhananjay Munde and others.
Opposition members had sought to know what financial help the government provided to families of the deceased in such cases, and if it was thinking of increasing the compensation amount.
In his written reply yesterday, the chief minister said that in the last five years, 24 women had died during the sterilisation procedure in Mumbai.
A District Quality Assurance Committee, set up in 2010, conducts in-depth inquiry into such deaths, the CM said.
A total of Rs 27 lakh were provided as compensation on account of such deaths from 2013-17, he said.
