The Jammu and Kashmir government today said that 26,000 new applications for old age, handicapped and widows' pensions had been sanctioned in the state as part of welfare schemes.
Minister for Social Welfare Sakina Itoo shared the data with the House during her reply to a question by J-K National Panthers Party member Yash Paul Kundal.
She said several pension applications could not be cleared due to a paucity of funds.
The minister later said that the Backward Classes Commission in the state had been made fully functional following the appointment of a chairperson and four members.
On the issue of notification of Backward Areas, the Minister said that all representations had been sent to the concerned deputy commissioners for verification and updating of information as required under law.
