An expressway bridge in central China's Henan Province was partially destroyed this morning after the truck carrying fireworks ahead of the Chinese New Year exploded on it.
China National Radio reported that at least 26 people were killed in the accident.
The state-run Xinhua news agency however said that at least four people died and eight others were injured in the tragic incident.
The explosion, which occurred around 8:52 am (local time), caused several vehicles to tumble from the bridge in Mianchi County, the city government of Sanmenxia said.
An 80-metre-long section of the bridge collapsed. Six vehicles have been retrieved from the debris.
The bridge is part of the Lianyungang-Khorgas Expressway. It connects the cities of Lianyungang in east China and Khorgas in northwest Xinjiang on the border with Kazakhstan.
Search and rescue efforts were under way. Traffic control was imposed on the expressway.
