According to data shared by Minister of State for HRD Mahendra Nath Pandey in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, as per UGC data the number of PhD enrollments was 10,497 on March 31, 2005.
This figure increased to 21,597 by March 31, 2010 and rose to 25,992 on March 31, 2014. As on March 31, 2015 there were 27,001 enrollments are per UGC data.
In response to a separate question, Pandey said that the number of PhD degrees awarded in Indian Universities in 2014-15 is 27,327.
He also said that five suicides have been reported from IITs and IIMs during the last three years.
