The number of nominations filed for the December 4 byelection to Yercaud Assembly constituency rose to 27, with six more independents submitting their papers, when the deadline for filing of papers ended today.
The principal opposition DMDK did not enter the fray, giving the contest to the ruling AIADMK and DMK.
Bypoll was necessitated following the death of sitting AIADMK MLA C Perumal.
Scrutiny of nominations will be taken up on November 18 and the last date for withdrawal is November 20.
Meanwhile, a Block Development Officer has been suspended by the Salem district Collector for alleged violation of model code of conduct by meeting a state Minister.
"M Jayaraman, Block Development Officer, Yercaud Panchayat Union has been suspended with effect from today by the Collector of Salem District, since he met and had discussion with the Minister for Highways and Minor Ports (Edappady Palanisamy) in the district while Model Code of Conduct is in force in connection with the Bye-election," a release from Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Kumar said.
