Around 28,000 acres of agriculture field in Tarn Taran district has been submerged in water due to excessive flow in Beas river causing damage to crops, infrastructure and live-stock, an official said today.
Flooding of water has damaged several crops including paddy, vegetables and sugar-cane, besides damage to several houses and death of live-stock, Deputy Commissioner Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal said.
However, the exact estimate of damage to crops can be made only after the fields get dry, he said.
Dhaliwal said he along with Commissioner (Jalandhar), R Venkatratnam, today visited all the affected villages and added that a team of district administration is taking stock of the situation and would submit its report in next few days.
All district officials including those from revenue and health department have been directed to remain available round-the-clock to those affected, he said.
A team of senior doctors are already on job in the affected villages, Dhaliwal added.
Meanwhile, Punjab Congress Secretary Patti Harminder, who also visited several affected villages, alleged that the government has not done anything except distributing of chlorine tablets.
He demanded that the government should immediately order fresh survey of crop damage and a compensation of Rs 20,000 per acre should be given to affected farmers.
