'2854 swines die in Mizoram' : Association claims

Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) has claimed over the lives of 2,854 swine in Mizoram during the last one and a half month, according to the Champhai District Vawkvulh Association or Champhai District Pig Rearers Association today.
Of the total swine deaths, the Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai district did have the highest toll at 2,684, CDVA Assistant Secretary Siammawia said.
"There has been no record of swine deaths in Champhai town and surrounding villages since last night," Siammawia, said, adding that the number of swine deaths has been steadily decreasing in Champhai town and surrounding villages since the last one week even as the area was the hardest hit since the outbreak of the dreaded PRRS.
This was the second PRRS outbreak in the state and the first outbreak during March-April in 2013 killed over 3,000 pigs in six out of eight districts in Mizoram, according to the CDVA, the representative association of the pig rearers here which coordinates with the administration.
