"During the drive in September, a total of 377 cases were registered and 286 persons were arrested, wherein 40 vehicles were seized, besides 73 persons indulged in selling gudumba (ID liquor) were bound over and five others were also booked under the stringent PD Act," a senior Excise official said.
The department will further intensify enforcement against illegal manufacturing of liquor and adulterated toddy and will also take up awareness campaigns that includes street plays, rallies and meetings to desist public from consuming ID liquor, Deputy Commissioner M M Farooqui said.
The trigger for withdrawal symptoms that led to their hospitalisation was government action, stepping up drive to check mixing of some chemicals/drugs into liquor and toddy that gave the "drunkards" some type of kick.
