Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has told a division bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court here that 3,944 stray dogs in the city have been sterilised and vaccinated against rabies.
The civic body made this submission before the division bench comprising Justice P K Jaiswal and Justice S C Sharma yesterday, in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Sanjay Pandey.
Counsel for the petitioner, Amitabh Upadhayay, argued that the effect of vaccination on the stray dogs lasts only about a year and the municipal corporation does not have a system through which it can identify as to which canines need the next round of vaccinations.
Citing an estimate, he said there were around 50,000 stray dogs in the city and there was an urgent need to curb their population in the light of incidents of dog bites.
During the last hearing on the issue held on October 15, IMC had informed the high court that there were around 29,000 stray dogs. However, Upadhayay had challenged the claim saying that the number was way above it.
