A local court today sentenced four persons, including three brothers, to life imprisonment in a double murder case that took place near Badlapur town in the district in 2011.
District and Sessions Judge (Kalyan) M J Mirza convicted Balchandra Bhopi, Balu Bhopi, Janardan Bhopi (all brothers) and Nitin Bhopi (their nephew) and sentenced them to life imprisonment of varying terms. Trial of the fifth accused in the case will be held separately.
Those killed in the attack were Vishnu Meher (30) and Devanand Mhaskar (40), while Vishnu's brothers Ramchandara and Harishchandra had sustained injuries.
Additional Public Prosecutor Jyoti Lohakare told the court that the accused and the victims were cousins and distant relatives and there was a dispute between the two parties over their ancestral property.
The incident took place on November 27, 2011 when the victims, after a court gave a verdict in their favour over the disputed land, were going to mount a board of their name at the property. At that time, the accused carried out the attack and killed two and injured others with lethal weapons.
