A neighborhood official in the capital of Central African Republic says three people are dead and 25 wounded after a demonstration turned violent.
The protest erupted yesterday in the Gobongo area of Bangui following the death of a student who had been kidnapped from his classroom by rebels who now control the politically volatile country.
A local official, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, confirmed that three people were killed including two rebels from the group known as Seleka.
Central African Republic has long been roiled by coups and rebellions. The president of a decade was overthrown in March by Seleka forces and the country has since largely descended into anarchy.
Human rights groups are calling on the UN Security Council to consider sanctioning Seleka's leaders.
