Additional Sessions Judge S Rajagopalan convicted Japan alias Jithendra Degra and his two friends, observing that because of the trio, the woman's "entire life was doomed."
"The injuries resulted in loss of her sight and also her face was disfigured... She did not get married as per betrothal. She lost her charming face and her life...," the Judge said.
According to prosecution, Nirmala, a resident of Ayanavaram here, had turned down the proposal of her neighbour Degra to marry her. Her parents finalised her marriage with another person.
On May 25, 2003, when she was returning home along with her sister, grandparents after her betrothal, Degra and two of his friends followed them, intercepted their vehicle, and threw concentrated nitric acid on Nirmala and others.
Nirmala was defaced and blinded in the incident. While her grandmother later died and two others injured seriously.
Degra and his friends Yuvaraj and Murugan were charged with attempt to murder with common intention under IPC.

Additional City Public Prosecutor submitted that the crime had the horrible impact not only on the life of victim, she has been brutally marred, snuffing out the possibility of leading a normal life. Most of the scar were unlikely to wade off and would remain for her rest of her life.
The judge, who held that the prosecution had established its case, also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 each on the three convicted and ordered that Rs 1.05 lakh of the total fine be paid to the victim.
