The accident occurred yesterday when the driver of an SUV proceeding to Dhule from Mumbai, in an attempt to avert a collision with a two-wheeler, rammed into three other cars coming from the opposite direction, an official at rural police control room in Adgaon said.
In the mishap, three passengers of a car were killed.
They were identified as Vinod Magan Vasave (54), his wife Minakshi Vinod Vasave (50) and their son Gaurav Vinod Vasave (18), a engineering student.
Nine persons travelling in the cars suffered injuries in the accident, police said.
The driver of the SUV was among those injured, police said, adding that an offence has been registered against him.
