militants were killed in an encounter with police in Tinkhuti area of Assam's Sonitpur district today, a top police official said.
In a joint operation launched by police and CRPF's Cobra team at Naojan adjoining Assam Arunachal Pradesh border since last night, a group of five NDFB (S) cadres fired on the security personnel this morning, Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parasar told PTI.
In the retaliatory exchange of fire three NDFB(S) extremists were killed and two escaped under forest cover, Parasar said.
The slain ultras have been identified as Rajai Mushahary, Custom Boro and Adlish Basumatary, she said.

These cadre were involved in killing of Lalit Boro, a BJP worker at Tinkhuti in the district on April 7 during the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls in the state, Parasar said.
Meanwhile, three youth - Krishna Mahatu (22), Manuj Giri (22) and Kanu Gupta (23) - of Sirajuli area under Dhekiajuli PS in the district were arrested today on charges of extortion demand in the name of NDFB (S).
According to police, the three accused had been making extortion demands for Rs 10 lakh and dire consequences in case of non-payment to the Assistant Manager of Belsiri Tea Estate in Misamari area over phone for the last several days.
