Three Nepali undertrial prisoners, who had escaped from the Kanda central jail under the cover of darkness on Wednesday, have been arrested from Solan district after their photographs were shared on the social media, a senior police official said today.
DGP Somesh Goel said the prisoners were arrested from Sayari forests in Kunihar area in a joint operation by Shimla and Solan police.
He said the police force used the social media to locate them. The police had released the photographs of the undertrials and had also shared them on the social media.
Prem Bahadur (22), Pratap Singh (27) and Leela Dhar (22) - all of who are Nepali nationals - had escaped from the jail by cutting the prison bars of the barrak they had been lodged.
They had then scaled the 16-feet outer wall of the jail using an iron pipe.
Goyal said: "While Prem Bahadur was nabbed on Thursday night, the other two were arrested today. The local residents played a pivotal role in the arrest and assisted the police."
Bahadur is facing trial in a rape case. Singh has been charged with raping a minor girl, and Dhar was allegedly involved in a murder case.
Two security guards of the jail were suspended for dereliction in duty following the escape. A manhunt was launched and thirty prison personnel were pressed into search operations.
