At least three new polio cases have been detected in Pakistan, taking the number of cases found so far this year to 16.
The country recorded 305 new cases last year, making it the most deadly year for the crippling disease since 2000.
An official of the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad said that three new polio victims were found after tests conducted in the virology facility of hospital.
The new cases were reported from Loralai in Balochistan, Dadu in Sindh and Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, an official was quoted as saying by the Dawn.
The official expressed surprise at the new cases as during winter poliovirus became less active because of low temperature.
In 2015, seven cases have been reported from KP, five from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and two each from Sindh and Balochistan.

Pakistan is one of only three countries along with Afghanistan and Nigeria where the polio virus is still endemic.
So far all efforts of the government have failed due to opposition by militants who frequently attack the polio workers and their official deployed for their security.
Last year the World Health Organisation (WHO) imposed travel restriction on Pakistan and on March 4, the world body announced that international travel restriction had been extended for another three months because the country had failed to stop exporting poliovirus.
