Three women, including a 28-year- old, were today crushed to death by a vehicle driven by a Delhi Police sub-inspector in Badarpur area here as he apparently dozed off at the wheels, a day after a traffic policeman was sacked and arrested for assaulting a woman.
Rishi Pal (59), currently posted with PCR Command at the police headquarters, was arrested and suspended from service and a case under 304 (A) of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was slapped on him, a senior police official said.
The deceased, all of whom were sanitation workers, have been identified as Shakuntala (55), Meera (50) and Maya (28).
The incident took place around 9:30 AM near a toll plaza on the Mehrauli-Badarpur road in South East Delhi when the sanitation workers were cleaning the road. The sub-inspector hit them at high speed, investigators said.
Pal, who is due to retire from service in January next year, had night duty at Police Headquarters and was returning to his home in Faridabad driving his Santro car, they said, adding he apparently dozed off and lost control of the car.
Eyewitnesses said that all three died on the spot.
"A Santro car came down from Badarpur side and mowed down my mother and two others. All of them died. The driver was later caught," said son of one of the women killed in the incident.
There were six women in all who were hired by the toll plaza authorities for cleaning purposes. Three were sweeping while three others were clearing garbage.
An FIR against the sub-inspector has been registered at Badarpur Police Station.
While police claimed that the sub inspector stopped on the spot and made a PCR call, eyewitnesses said he was caught by toll plaza guards.
"We have been hired by toll authorities for cleaning the stretch. Our shift starts at 7:30 AM, the incident took place around 9:30 AM. The driver who was later identified as a policeman was caught by the guards," said one of the woman who escaped unhurt.
Today's incident came a day after a head constable of Delhi Police hit a woman with a brick in posh Golf Links area in central Delhi after an altercation. Head Constable was arrested and dismissed from service.
