A 30-year-old man died at a hospital here on Saturday while he was on judicial custody, police said.
Hemant Mondal of Telenga Bazar here was arrested by police as a non-bailable warrant was pending against him. He was produced before a court on March 28 which sent him to judicial custody the same day.
The prison authorities sent him to hospital as he was unwell. While undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here, Hemant died on Saturday morning.
The family members of Mondal alleged that he died due to police torture.
City DCP Akhileswar Singh denied the allegations of the family members of Hemant and said he was wanted in an attempt to murder case and was arrested on March 28 and on the same day he was produced before a court which sent him to jail.
"While in jail custody, the deceased was taken ill and he was shifted to the hospital where he died this morning while undergoing treatment," the DCP said.
