Under the NCLP scheme, as on September 30, as many as 35,148 children were rescued from work and mainstreamed whereas the number of such children was 1,16,957 in 2014-15, stated Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya in written reply to Lok Sabha today.
According to the reply, in 2013-14 64,050 children were rescued and rehabilitated under the scheme while the number of such children were 72,976 in 2012-13.
The minister said that the Census 2011 figure show a decline in the category of workers in the age group of 5-14 to 43.53 lakh from 1.21 crore.
For rehabilitation of the rescued children under the Act, government is running NCLP since 1988. The Act prohibits the employment of children below 14 years of age in certain occupations and processes and regulates the working conditions of the children in employment where they are not prohibited.
Under the Act, as many as 2,75,759 inspections were conducted across the country in 2014. In 2013 and 2012, the government conducted 2,24,288 and 1,85,851 inspections, respectively.
