With the recovery of nine more bodies from the sea today, the number of people drowned at Karachi's popular beaches while bathing during Eid holidays has risen to 36, a media report said.
Yesterday, rescuers had recovered bodies of 27 men who had ventured into the seas. Twenty-four bodies were recovered from Sea View beach while two from Paradise Point and another from Hubco beaches respectively.
Three people are reportedly still missing and the rescue efforts are underway, The Express Tribune reported.
Dozens of revellers were killed off the Arabian Sea shore on Wednesday after defying a ban on swimming during the monsoon season.
They were among the thousands who had taken to the beaches to enjoy the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays marking the end of Ramzan, which began on Tuesday and ends today.
"We have pulled out more dead bodies from the sea and the total number of the people who died after drowning has now reached 36," Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui said.
"We had imposed section 144 in the Seaview, Hawksbay and Sandspit beach areas but people don't listen. Due to Eid holidays thousands of people showed up and it became impossible for the rescue personnel to manage things," he said.
"We will continue the search operation as we are still not sure about the number of missing picnickers," he added.
